One of the toughest problems to deal with is the issue of school administrators. In some schools, the administrators do not want to hear any complaints from the students. There is now the issue of satisfying the students at all times. The consumer service mentality has now consumed the colleges since the students are seen as the banks. With the high cost of tuition and the amount of money schools generate from it, administrators do not want to lose any student. They will therefore go to any extent to keep certain students whether they are doing well or not. There are some schools where the administrators even interfere with the grading of instructors. Some instructors are forced to change grades under the duress of the administrators. Some instructors fear losing their jobs so they will rather pass a student with a minimum grade so that they will not incur the wrath of the administrators. This is even worst in these difficult economic times. Should a student who has not mastered a course be promoted? Should wholesale promotion occur in our colleges?
We want to satisfy students but should we sacrifice course content mastery with customer satisfaction? In an era where more and more adjuncts are teaching courses, this problem continue to magnify if administrators don't offer them full support in ensuring that the course expectations are met. Many good adjuncts are not offer classes when they are very strict with grading. Quite sad, but this happens frequently. In order to get their daily bread, they end up giving up their strictness and then join the mainstream of freebies. What is the result of this? We end up graduating some students who cannot pass professional exams such as NCLEX, PRAXIS, MCAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. since these exams are not there to satisfy whatever the consumer wants. How can we produce math majors who cannot pass basic elementary PRAXIS exams let alone the content one?
Standards are falling in our colleges and it behooves on us to ensure that this is corrected. Some schools are just interested in having high graduation rates to show the world that they are good but if you really test the products from some of these schools, it is really a shame. They complete but they cannot pass basic employment exams, hence, less chance of landing their dream jobs in their field of study. They are then saddled with all these school loans which they have to pay the rest of their lives doing minimum wage jobs.
True Education is not just about meeting the numbers to obtain federal grants. It is about changing and cultivating the mind to be able to think and function effectively in the society. To be able to produce great thinkers and people who can invent and bring about innovations. Just passing through a college will not help us achieve any of these. We will just end up producing more and more functional illiterates. Administrators, wake and support the instructors!
